Band
Band is a small town about 30 minutes away from TM where I live. Jannes' church has been very involved there for many years, helping the large Gypsy community that lives there. There is much prejudice against the Roma community throughout most of Europe and that holds true in Romania as well. Jannes led a children's program with interns helping and I was able to bring Margareta and Janos from Casa Nadia to help as well. Our kids have received huge blessings from the Lord and it is so easy to just accept what you have as what you deserve...I want them to be aware of what they have and to begin to foster a willingness in them to help others. Jannes gave the kids jobs and they did them. At first they were very uncomfortable, understandably, because of the very large crowd (over 200 kids!) and the smell and dirtiness that accompanies them. But they stuck in there and were helpful. At the end of the program each child received half a banana and a cookie and the kids helped pass them out. Margareta was very concerned that each child did get their cookie. She wanted to be more generous than the number of cookies we had... it was sweet.
Band was the talk of the house that day and when kids were tucked into bed that evening, Margareta prayed for the kids at Band as did Daniela, who hadn't gone, but was affected by what she heard. The next day, I took Laura and Adi to Band... Adi remembers his time in his Gypsy village.... remembers the language... he helped lead singing (we did a stations program outside that day as there were too many kids to fit inside the church). Jannes talked with all the kids after they had been and got interesting reports from them. Why are they so dirty? Where are their moms and dad? Do they have money? Adi was so moved by what he saw that he wants to give money to the kids at Band and can't wait to go back. It was a well worth it learning experience!
